Tropism guidelines

Welcome to the website of the European group for consensus guidelines on clinical management of HIV-1 tropism testing

The European Consensus on clinical management of HIV-1 tropism testing has developed guideline for the use of tropism tests. These Guidelines have been published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases and can be download from the publisher website:

Background
Co-receptor tropism refers to the ability of HIV-1 to utilize the human chemokine receptors CCR5 (R5-virus), CXCR4 (X4-virus), or both (dual-tropic viruses or mixed populations of R5- and X4- viruses) for viral entry into CD4 cells. Following the FDA/EMEA approval of the first CCR5-coreceptor antagonist, which only inhibits R5-viruses, pre-assessment of viral tropism is required for clinical use.
Active exchange of procedures for tropism testing is sought in Europe in order to optimise and standardise available tropism determination techniques. Guidelines advise on the optimal clinical management of tropism testing and will be regularly be updated to reflect upcoming developments.
